What is Cloud Hosting?
What is cloud website hosting really? The term 'cloud' appears to be very fashionable in today's IT, Internet and hosting terminology. Even so, only a few in fact are informed about what cloud hosting is. Perhaps it is a sensible idea to inform yourself about cloud website hosting services. To make a quite long story short, we will firstly tell you what cloud hosting is not.
1. Cloud Website Hosting is Not Confined to a Remote Disk Storage Only.
1. Providing a remote disk storage solution, which involves one data storage appliance for all users, does not transform any specific web hosting vendor into a real cloud website hosting vendor.
The cPanel hosting vendors call the ability to supply remote file storage services a cloud website hosting solution. Up till now there is nothing bad about the cloud terminology, but... we are discussing hosting services, not remote data storage services for individual or business purposes. There's always one "but", isn't there? It's not sufficient to dub a shared hosting solution, powered by a single-server hosting platform, exactly like cPanel, a "cloud website hosting" service. This is so because the remaining fractions of the entire web hosting platform must be working in exactly the same manner - this does not apply only to the remote file storage. The remaining services entailed in the whole hosting procedure also must be remote, isolated and "clouded". And that's quite hard. A very meager number of hosting service providers can really achieve it.
2. It Entails Domains, Mailbox Aliases, Databases, FTPs, Web Hosting CPs, and so on.
Cloud website hosting is not confined to a remote disk storage exclusively. We are discussing a web hosting service, serving countless domain names, online portals, electronic mail accounts, etc., aren't we?
To call a hosting service a "cloud website hosting" one calls for a lot more than supplying merely remote file storage mounts (or maybe servers). The e-mail server(s) need to be dedicated exclusively to the email associated services. Carrying out nothing else than these specific assignments. There might be only one single or maybe a whole cluster of mail servers, determined by the overall load produced. To have an authentic cloud website hosting service, the remote database servers should be working as one, regardless of their actual number. Performing nothing else. The same goes for the clients' web hosting Control Panels, the FTP, and so on.
3. There are Cloud Domain Servers (DNSs) too.
The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of an authentic cloud website hosting distributor will support multiple data center locations on multiple continents.
Here's an instance of a Domain Name Server of an authentic cloud website hosting provider:
If such a Domain Name Server is offered by your hosting plans provider, it's not a guarantee that there is a cloud web hosting platform in use, but you can absolutely be convinced when you observe a DNS such as the one below:
that there isn't any cloud web hosting service. This kind of DNS merely shows that the web hosting environment in use is one-server based. Perhaps it's cPanel. cPanel is a single-server web hosting platform and maintains a market share of more than ninety eight percent. In cPanel's case, one single server deals with all hosting services (web, email, DNS, databases, File Transfer Protocol, Control Panel(s), files, etc.).
Remote File Storage - The Distorted Characterization of Cloud Website Hosting.
So, a cloud website hosting service is not limited simply to a remote file storage service, as numerous web hosting firms wish it was. Unluckily for them, if that was the case, most of the file web hosting corporations would have been referred to as cloud hosting ones long ago! They are not categorized as such, since they plainly deliver file web hosting solutions, not cloud hosting solutions. The file hosting platform seems indeed quite plain, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote file storage platform is not a cloud hosting platform. It cannot be, because it's merely one tiny segment of the entire cloud hosting platform. There's plenty more to be found in the cloud web hosting platform: the web hosting CP cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the FTP cloud, the email cloud and... in the not too distant future, perhaps a few new clouds we currently are not familiar with will come up out of nowhere.
